Movie Flat Road view of Alabama Hills

This photograph was taken along Movie Flat Road in Alabama Hills in California. There are beautiful views all throughout Alabama Hills but to reach this exact spot, you'll want to start your trip in Lone Pine California and head west out of town on Whitney Portal Road. Once you turn onto Whitney Portal Road from Main St, continue for 2.7 miles and then turn right onto Movie Flat Road. Continue on Movie Flat Road for about 2.1 miles and there will be a pullout on your left. Park here and step out of the car and you'll be at this view.

You can visit Alabama Hills and get great shots anytime of year, but I personally like the winter months for fresh snow on the mountain peaks in the distance. It also gets quite hot and busy here in the summer.

Start shooting before sunrise to get completely even light across the whole scene, then watch as the first light of day lights up the distant mountain peaks and rock formations in front of you. I suggest staying in Lone Pine or camping at any of the drive up spots in Alabama Hills to be here for sunrise.

If you do camp here, it's completely free, but there are no outhouses, potable water or waste receptacles. It's a 'pack it in pack it out' location.

Although I didn't have a model in this shot, I think it would look great to have a human element in the frame.

Bring different lenses and experiment with different compositions. Get creative and don't let this one perspective limit you!

The Mobius Arch Loop Hike is a nice hike to do in Alabama Hills.

Alabama Hills Cafe and Bakery is an excellent food and coffee spot in Lone Pine.

And Tacos Los Hermanos Food Truck is a good food spot, too.
