Sunrise
All months are suitable to photograph the Malibu coastline, although summer will be a bit warmer. Winter generally has better sunrises and sunsets.
The featured shot was taken at sunrise. It’s one of the few beaches in Southern California that allows you to shoot sunrise with the sun rising over the water. The way the coastline curves makes this an awesome sunrise spot.
You can also turn right and shoot the pier at sunset making this a great spot either time of the day.
Field tips
Bring clothes that can get wet. There is often shorebreak in front of the parking lot so keep that in mind if you're trying to shoot from the sand.
A wide-angle lens (22mm) really helps capture the coastline and the waves breaking in front of you.
Check the surf report and visit when the waves are big — it’ll add a dramatic factor to your pictures!
