At 7,850 feet above sea level, this drive-up alpine lake offers commanding views of the surrounding mountains, especially thanks to its famed crystal-clear waters. You’ll be surprised at how the lake reflects the soaring peaks as if it’s a mirror.

From US-395 you'll turn directly onto Convict Lake Rd (a stunning road for photos) and take it about 3 miles till you hit Convict Creek; there you'll see the grand view and have plenty of spots to safely park your car.
Once parked, the GPS coordinates will lead you to the point in the road where I walked down to the adjacent shoreline and snapped the featured shot.
Tips
When to go
Best season
January, February, March, November, December
Best time
Morning
Your best shot at capturing snow on the mountains and rocks is during the winter months from November to March.
Rise and shine, you'll need the rising sun from the east to light the mountains you'll be facing to the west.
Field tips
I used a 24mm lens to capture a sweeping view of the surrounding mountains’ reflection on the lake.
I composed this shot in Live View and used the in-camera leveler to ensure I was level with the lake's horizon line.
Position your camera as low to the water as possible for an all-encompassing reflection of the mountains and sky.
Move around the shoreline for an array of different rocky perspectives!
