Blackstone Apartments, Nice to Meet You Bookstore

avatar
@seven7panda
This lavish, Baroque-style architectural gem, dating back to 1924, is the first purpose-built luxury apartment complex for expatriates in Shanghai. A colorful mosaic floor and dramatic white-and-green arched corridor welcome visitors into the historical building's first floor, which has been converted into a charming book store and cafe.

This photo of the Blackstone Apartments corridor was taken from the front entrance on the first floor, directly after walking inside and looking down the hallway. To get here, take Line 1 or Line 7 to Changshu Road Station. Exit the station and head south on Changshu Road for about 300 meters. Turn left on 宝庆路, and then make a right on 复兴中路. Turn left on Fuxing Middle Road for another 150 meters. The Blackstone Apartments and the Nice to Meet You bookstore will be on your right. Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning
All months are suitable for photographing the interior corridor of Blackstone Apartments.
As the Blackstone Apartments corridor is not lit by natural light, it's sufficient for shooting at any time of day. However, I suggest visiting in the morning, when you'll have less competition shooting the entrance without people.

Field tips

Using a wide-angle lens (24mm) in this space will allow you to capture as much of the room as possible.
When framing your shot, use the natural wall and floor shape of the hallway to create leading lines that draw the eye down to the center of your image.
Instead of keeping your entire image in focus, try playing around with exposures. Using a tripod and a slower shutter speed, and having a subject walk in the frame, will create a playful motion shot that contrasts well with the rigid architectural lines of the room.
