I took this image in the middle of Yuyuan Garden, which is in the north-eastern part of the old Chinese city. To get there, I recommend taking the metro.
By Metro:
- Closest Station: Yuyuan Garden (Line 10)
- Take Exit 4
- Head to the middle of this bazaar to get this view
Yuyuan Garden, No.137 Anren Street, Huangpu District, Shanghai.

Night
You can photograph from the garden any month of year.
I recommend visiting at night during or after it rains. It won’t be as busy then and the building lights will be on allowing you to capture a reflection shot. The area truly comes alive in the rain — especially the reflective neon lights!
Field tips
By using a wide-angle lens (17mm) you will be able to frame the entirety of the ancient buildings and a reflection in the foreground.
If there are people in the area, incorporate them in your shot for an added human element.
Get down really low to frame the entirety of the ancient buildings and its reflection in your frame. You may get wet, so remember to bring a raincoat with you.
