Hope the Blue Whale Skeleton, Hintze Hall at Natural History Museum (night)

avatar
@theliamman
Easily one the grandest halls in London, this massive space is the gateway to collections and galleries of artifacts from around the world. Currently, the museum is home to a skeleton of the largest animal to ever live, a rock as old as the solar system, a 129-million-year-old Mantellisaurus (dinosaur fossil) and huge slices from a 101 meter-tall giant sequoia tree!

This photo was taken from the landing of the stairs in the Hintze Hall main entrance of the Natural History Museum (Green Zone). After you've entered the main entrance of the museum from Exhibition Road, follow the signs that lead to Hintze Hall (Green Zone). Walk the length of the hall and up the grand staircase near the statue of Charles Darwin. Once on the first floor where the Charles Darwin Statue is, walk to the left toward the end of the hall that you entered from. Here you'll find the landing on the staircase with a view of the hall and Hope the Blue Whale. By London Underground: - Closest Station: South Kensington (via Piccadilly, District or South Kensington lines) - Head east on Thurloe St toward Exhibition Rd - Turn left onto Exhibition Rd and the museum will be on your left Address: Natural History Museum, Cromwell Rd, South Kensington, London SW7 5BD, United Kingdom

Tips

When to go

Best season

January, February, October, November, December

Best time

Night
In the spring and summer months, the museum will close before sunset, so make sure to visit when the sun sets before the 5:50PM closing time to capture Hintze Hall in the dark.
Capture the dark night sky coming in during the nighttime. I recommend visiting during the weekday so you'll have less people in your shot. Also, try to avoid the holiday season when kids are out of school.

Field tips

Try standing directly in the center of the landing to get Hope, the Blue Whale centered in the composition.
Shooting with a wide-angle lens (12mm) will allow you to capture the scale of the room.
If you do not own a fisheye/ultra-wide lens, you can take multiple photos and stitch them together using software like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom or Microsoft Image Composite Editor.
