Weltenburg Abbey and Danube River

avatar
@cinnadine
Weltenburg Abbey is the oldest monastery brewery in the world and it has been operating since 1050. Up for a challenge before enjoying a beer in the abbey? Try hiking to this spot where you'll have an amazing view of the abbey, Danube River, and the gorgeous Bavarian mountains.

This photo of the Weltenburg Abbey and Danube River was taken at a dedicated hilltop viewpoint outside of Kelheim. The best way to get there is by car. To get there, you need to leave Kelheim and drive in the direction of the Liberation Hall of Kehlheim. After that, follow the signs to Goniwiatr which is on the opposite side of the river from the abbey, super close to the viewpoint. As long as there is space and it is allowed, you can park there. From there, there is a small trail that goes up through the woods and it will lead you directly to the viewpoint. The hike is around 10 minutes with a little elevation gain.

Best time

Sunset
The best time to capture Weltenburg Abbey and Danube river from the hilltop would be in spring or autumn when the foliage and plant life is colorful, like you see in my image. That said, you visit any month of year. Be careful in the winter as the rocks are more slippery than usual.
Even the locals describe this viewpoint a go-to sunset spot! The sun sets behind the woods, adding a perfect golden hue to the Abbey and the winding Danube river.

Field tips

Be careful while walking, especially around the edge! This spot can be dangerous as it is super high on the cliff. Good hiking shoes are a must to avoid slippering.
Use a wide-angle lens (24mm) to more easily capture the Abbey, Danube river, and model in your frame.
This photo was shot from a lower angle where it would be difficult to set up a tripod. Consider bringing a model to have a subject in your photo as you won't really be able to take a photo of yourself.
By getting low when photographing your model, you create a sense of invitation and equality, whereas a top-down shot can give off a superiority feeling.
Placing your model in the center of your frame helps split the image, the Abbey and river to their left and rock and mountains to the right.
