When to go
Best season
March, April, May, September, October
The best time to capture Weltenburg Abbey and Danube river from the hilltop would be in spring or autumn when the foliage and plant life is colorful, like you see in my image.
That said, you visit any month of year. Be careful in the winter as the rocks are more slippery than usual.
Even the locals describe this viewpoint a go-to sunset spot! The sun sets behind the woods, adding a perfect golden hue to the Abbey and the winding Danube river.
Field tips
Be careful while walking, especially around the edge! This spot can be dangerous as it is super high on the cliff. Good hiking shoes are a must to avoid slippering.
Use a wide-angle lens (24mm) to more easily capture the Abbey, Danube river, and model in your frame.
This photo was shot from a lower angle where it would be difficult to set up a tripod. Consider bringing a model to have a subject in your photo as you won't really be able to take a photo of yourself.
By getting low when photographing your model, you create a sense of invitation and equality, whereas a top-down shot can give off a superiority feeling.
Placing your model in the center of your frame helps split the image, the Abbey and river to their left and rock and mountains to the right.

How about a sunset picnic at this perfect spot? Bring some snacks and make the most of your time here!
Hike to the Abbey to enjoy a beer or two. About 15 minutes away from the Abbey you have The Kehlheim Liberty Hall—a monument symbolizing victory over Napoleon.
The historical town of Regensburg is about a 30-minute drive away. There are ferries between Weltenburg Abbey and Regensburg if you want to visit this pretty city.
