When to go
Best season
October, November, December
The early winter and autumn months are the best months to photograph the Monschau cottages, Roer River & Panoramaweg observation deck. During the fall, the trees have an amazing amber color that looks spectacular in combination with the golden hue of the sunset.
I also love to visit this town when they get fresh snow during winter.
Visit during the late afternoon to check out some local stores and wait for the sunset. The pre-sunset light will illuminate the smaller hills around the village and allow for some golden light to make its way down to the river and houses.
Field tips
I used a mobile phone at this location, but I recommend using a wide-angle lens to more easily capture the river, houses and observation deck all in one frame.
Use the natural shape of the river as a leading line in your image. It will guide the eye to the golden hills above the village cottages.
A zoom lens might also be useful here so you can take more detailed shots of the unique architecture.

Do nearby
Definitely spend some time in the town. It has a rich cloth-mill history and it also serves as an inspiration for those who love medieval architecture. Walk around, enjoy the sights and shops, and don't forget to check out the Monschau Castle, which is now a youth hostile and concert venue in the summer months.
