When to go
Best season
October, November
The autumn months, mostly October and November, are the best times to photograph the auburn-colored trees in the forest of the Wernigerode Castle. You'll also have a better chance of capturing the fog over the village in the fall.
For similar conditions, visit the castle during sunrise to photograph the soft morning light and fog that will create a blanket of mist over the city.
Field tips
Follow local drone regulations and permit requirements. In Germany, you're required to have insurance and an address on your drone if it weighs more than 250g (approx. 0.5 lbs).
Definitely bring a jacket to stay warm if you visit in the morning (even in the summer mornings). It can get quite cold and windy on the hill.
Make sure to fly high enough that you incorporate the village streets into your photo. Showing the quaint village and its streets below the castle will highlight the dominance of the castle's architecture.
I prefer to use the forest trees to frame my images as it will give your photo a better depth of field.

Do nearby
Visit the castle and check out the many different rooms that contain historical artifacts. They even have a room that's set up as if guests were throwing a dinner party in the dining room. Immerse yourself in the scene and see how royalty used to live in luxury.
If you'd like to hike, check out the nearby Altar der Wahrheit.
