This photo was taken from the roof of One Woodward office tower in Detroit, looking southeast toward Hart Plaza and the Detroit River. About a week prior to photographing, you'll need to contact the property managers of the building to be granted access to the roof. Let them know you'll be taking photos there and they should allow you to have access. Once you enter the building, the security will lead you up to the roof and you can photograph from there. Tips

When to go

Best season

June, July

Best time

Night
During the end of June and the beginning of July, the firework display will happen weekly on the Detroit River.
The fireworks go off at night, so it's best to visit then.

Field tips

To best photograph fireworks you'll want to do a long exposure, so bring along a tripod.
For a sense of symmetry, make sure to have the boats — which will be on the southeast side of the river — in the back center of your photo to draw the eye to the fireworks.
You'll get 360-degree views from the roof, so bring along multiple lenses and experiment with different viewpoints.
