I took this image from Pier 1 in the Brooklyn Bridge Park. I faced the East River and Manhattan skyline. Look for the pylons protruding from the water and reference the GPS coordinate in satellite mode — it's easy to find!
By Subway:
- Closest Station: Clark Street (2 or 3 Trains)
- Head north on Henry Street toward Pineapple Walk.
- Turn left onto Old Fulton Street, turn left onto Vine Street and then take a slight right onto Doughty.
- Turn left on the Brooklyn Bridge Park Greenway and the destination will be on your right.
Tips
When to go
Best season
September
Best time
Night
To capture the Tribute in Light memorial, you need to go in early September when they are lit up.
The best time to visit is early evening when the sky is very dark. You'll want to do a long exposure to capture the lights at their brightest point.
Field tips
You'll need a tripod to shoot the lights as there isn't anything to rest your camera on. Be sure to bring one!
Try aligning yourself with the pylons and using them to lead the viewer's eyes towards the skyline.
Vary your height and change your angles when photographing the lights. You can try to get creative and use a low point of view to have the pylons more in focus.

Do nearby
Walk north along the waterfront towards Jane’s Carousel for various vantage points of the lights. Inside St. Ann’s warehouse provides a nice elevated view of the lights, too.
Make sure to swing by the waterfront near the playground close to Washington Street. The small beach filled with stones provides a beautiful foreground for a shot with the Brooklyn Bridge and downtown behind it.
The Brooklyn promenade by Brooklyn Heights has a great view of lower Manhattan. It’s located behind the pylons, up the hill. An easy shortcut is to take the foot bridge nearby.
