Capture this historic lighthouse off the coast of a sprawling peninsula. The ocean-blue waves crashing against the vibrant green landscape creates a breathtaking view of a more serene side of New York.

The featured image is of the Montauk Lighthouse Museum in Montauk, New York. For this shot, I stood in the Montauk Lighthouse Overflow Lot and flew my drone overhead, flying east toward the water. I recommend driving to this location. Address: Montauk Lighthouse Overflow Lot, Montauk Point State Pkwy Montauk, NY 11954

Tips

When to go

Best season

May, June, July, August, September

Best time

Sunset
For similar weather conditions, I suggest visiting this location in the spring and summer months. The landscape will be a lush green color and the summer sun against the water will create a beautiful blue hue.
I took the photo at 8 PM –– the summer's late setting sun casts a soft, orange light onto the coastline giving the landscape a nice warmth, which contrasts beautifully against the blue sea.

Field tips

Be aware of your surroundings! Anytime you fly a drone, you should check to make sure there aren't any rules and restrictions in the area.
This waterfront vantage point can be very windy, so I recommend using a larger, heavier drone — smaller drones are at risk of getting windswept away.
Fly your drone carefully away from the coast –– this will give you a wider perspective to capture Montauk Point, the lighthouse and the water in your shot.

Visit the Montauk Lighthouse Museum. The lighthouse was originally built in 1796 and is now home to a collection of historical artifacts and documents, like the deed to the land in Montauk signed by George Washington.
