I took this photograph facing east on the rooftop of Mantena Apartments, located in Midtown. It has great views of the Empire State Building and The New Yorker hotel.
This is private property. You should only visit as a guest of the property. Once inside the building, it’s as simple as taking the elevator to the roof.
By Subway:
- Closest Station: 34 Penn Station (1 or 2 Train)
- Walk north on 8th Ave
- Turn left on 35th Streert
- Turn right on 9th Ave
- Turn left on 37th Street
- The destination will be on your right
Address:
Mantena Apartments, 431 W 37th St, New York, NY 10018

You can photograph from the Mantena Apartment rooftop all year round.
To capture the city's illuminated skyline, I recommend visiting at night. It's also a beautiful view during the day, but you won't get the same effect without having the buildings lights lit up.
Field tips
This rooftop is a low-risk photo opportunity for anyone that’s trying to get a higher vantage point of Midtown. Play around with your view to get more shots of the city from up above.
Incorporate the railings to give the photo a different perspective. I used the streets as leading lines and the Empire State Building as the centerpiece of my photo.
Consider taking a long exposure to capture light trails from the passing cars.

Head north and grab dinner in Hell's Kitchen. This area is famous for it's restaurant and bar scene.
After dinner, see a show. Hell's Kitchen is adjacent to Manhattan's theatre district. A trip to a show is a must-see in New York — especially if you're visiting from out of town!
