Best time

Sunset
Manhattanhenge, aka the Manhattan Solstice, is the most well-known summer sunset phenomenon in the city. Between late May and early July, the sun is in exact alignment with the street grid creating the perfect sunset view. Make sure you time it right, as the Manhattanhenge will most likely be 5-10 minutes prior to the actual sunset time. Outside of these months, the sun will set prior to passing through the grid of the streets.
Early morning is also a good time to visit as the rising sun will be behind you illuminating the entire street view.

Field tips

By using a wide-angle lens (24mm) you'll be able to frame the length of 42nd street and heights of the skyscrapers.
Bring a tripod since you'll need a slower shutter speed to capture additional light around the buildings. There's a railing on the overpass where you can rest your camera if you don’t have a tripod as well.
Align yourself with the double yellow line in the street to accurately get yourself in the middle of the frame.
