Powis Gate Tower Entrance

Just south of King's College and across the High Street lies this impressive and imposing archway with a Near Eastern influence as seen in its minaret towers. Even with all of the unique architecture in Old Aberdeen, this location stands out as one of my favorites.

The image was taken outside of Powis Gates, just south of King's College in Aberdeen. You can either take a car or just walk (about 1.5 miles) from the Aberdeen Station to get to this spot. By ScotRail: - Closest station: Aberdeen (via Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry, LNER or ScotRail) - Head northwest toward Guild St/A93 - Turn right onto Guild St/A93 - Turn left onto Stirling St - Turn left onto Hadden St - Slight left onto Correction Wynd - Turn left at St Nicholas St - Turn right toward Upperkirkgate - Turn left toward Upperkirkgate - Slight right toward Upperkirkgate - Turn left onto Gallowgate - At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Mounthooly - Turn left onto King's Cres - Continue onto Spital - Continue onto College Bounds - Turn left, then right and Powis Gates will be on your right

Tips

When to go

Best season

April, May, June, July, August, September

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Powis Gate can be accessed and photographed all year round, but to capture the greenery, I recommend coming here in the spring and summer months.
Aberdeen can get quite dark and moody so it's best to capture this location in the morning or mid-day when the light is the brightest.

Field tips

To get another angle, try walking inside the gates and taking photos from the other side. There will be more space from this perspective and you can fit the gates into your shot, too.
Have your model wear a bright color so that they stand out against the gray architecture.
By standing directly in front of the doors you will achieve a sense of symmetry and balanced composition.

Do nearby

While you're in the area, don't miss King's College or St Machar's Cathedral. This area is filled with old architecture and is also known as "Granite City" because of its monochrome, gray buildings.
