This charming lane is a popular spot for photographers, but make no mistake — it's just as beautiful on camera as it is in person and can be enjoyed by anyone (photographer or not) whenever it's visited.

This image of Circus Mews and the Saint Stephen's Edinburgh clocktower was taken looking east on Circus Lane. Edinburgh is a relatively walkable city and from Edinburgh Waverly Station, it's approximately a 20-minute walk to this spot. Once you reach the intersection between St Vincent Street and Circus Lane, head down and look back to frame the clocktower. By public transportation: - Closest station: Edinburgh Waverly Station (via Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, CrossCountry Lines) - Head west on Princes St - Turn right on Frederick St - Cross through Queen Street Garden (Frederick St will become Howe St, then St Vincent St) - Turn left on Circus Ln

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Sunset
As long as there isn't any rain or snow, you can capture a similar scene of Circus Mews on Circus Lane during any month. For reference, I shot this image in December.
I suggest shooting at sunset to capture the golden glow on the side of the Saint Stephen's Edinburgh clocktower. This is usually quite a popular street, so try to avoid the middle of the day if possible.

Field tips

Bring along a model to capture some movement in your photo. This will be a form of trial and error with the model moving around, but I suggest continuously firing off shots to get the desired image. I think it's best to have the model in a flowy dress to further emphasize their movement.
For a fresh perspective, walk down further along Circus Lane to get another view of the clocktower.
Focal lengths of 35-50mm will give you a good frame, as well as a good subject separation.
Pay attention to how you line up the tower and the curved road. In my image, the tower hovers in the middle of the road.
