When to go
Best season
June, July, August
Best time
Late afternoon, Sunset
This aerial view of McCaig's Tower is best photographed during June, July and August when you'll be able to capture the greenery and enjoy the nice weather that Oban summer's have to offer.
During sunset (which is when I took this photo), you'll be able to capture similar lighting conditions.
Sunrise will also provide great light and you'll most likely have the entire place to yourself in the early morning.
Field tips
Before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements.
Position your drone above the tower with a slight look down. At golden hour, you should be able to get interesting shadows and colors in the surrounding area if you slightly angle your drone.
Try flying high directly above the tower and looking straight down as well for an interesting abstract shot. Move the drone all around to change up the foreground and background while keeping the tower in the center of the frame.
I suggest parking in the city centre and then walking up the hill to soak in the vibes of the old village. Walk around and look for more interesting shots while you make your way to the tower.
I suggest bringing along a friend or model since you'll be able to get some beautiful portraits in the gardens when the sunrise or sunset light breaks through the structure.

Check out another beautiful castle nearby that's called Castle Stalker. A quick 30-minute drive away, this privately-owned castle is surrounded by water and runs a limited number of tours each year. It's located in Appin, which is a beautiful coastal district of the Scottish West Highlands that's worth exploring as well.
