avatar
@philngyn
Can you believe that hermits, cavepeople and bears used to live here? Berggasthaus means “mountain guesthouse” in German and today, it welcomes (human) tourists from all over the world. Located in the middle of the Alps the amazing Wildkirchli Caves nearby, Berggasthaus is literally built into a cliff, and its back wall is made up of the rock itself.

This photo was taken in front of the Berggasthaus Aescher, a mountain guesthouse in the Swiss Alps. To get here, make your way to the town of Wasserauen. It's about 1 hour and 20 minutes away from Zurich. Once you're in Wasserauen, you have two options to get to the guesthouse: cable car or hiking. Most visitors choose to take the cable car as the hike up is quite steep. After the short ride to the top, you begin your easy 20-minute “hike” down and around the mountain to the Berggasthaus Aescher. Zurich to Wasserauen by car: Take A1 until Gossau and turn right to Route 8. Then follow the signs until Wasserauen. Park your car near Ebenalp cable car. You can take the cable car or hike. Zurich to Wasserauen by train: Take IR13 until Gossau and then S23 to Wasserauen. Wasserauen to Berggasthaus by cable car: Ebenalp cable car leaves every 15 minutes and costs 34 Swiss Francs. Wasserauen to Berggasthaus on foot: Many locals hike to Berggasthaus. It will be a steep hike passing through the town of Seealpsee and the guesthouse's restaurant. This is definitely for the more adventurous visitors.
