Laguna Beach view of Shaw's Cove

On a cliff generously decorated with tall palm trees, you will find Laguna Beach’s nicest coves in a secluded spot. During sunset, the reflections of the palm trees and the pink sky will only enhance the beauty of the already charming California coast.

This location is Shaw's Cove on Laguna Beach. Park on Cliff Dr. or one of the nearby streets. Be aware, some of the parking spots close to Pacific Coast Highway require meter payment, but if you're on a street near the beach the parking is mostly free. The stairs to the beach are accessible on the intersection of Cliff Dr. and Fairview St. To the north, you'll have a nice view of the palm trees. Looking south you'll be able to see down the coast towards central Laguna Beach which is a great shot during sunrise as the sun rises over the hills.

Best time

Sunset
All months are suitable to photograph the beach in Southern California, although winter seems to bring the best sunsets.
The sun sets behind the palm trees and provides a perfect photo opportunity for anyone wanting a classic California shot. Morning light is also nice about an hour after sunset once the sun rises over the hills. Laguna Beach is a very hilly area so unless there's good clouds that could light up, it's generally best waiting about an hour or so after sunrise to get a south facing shot. Try to go during low tide (always check tides when shooting at the beach); you'll have even more reflections.

Field tips

Wear clothes that can get wet. To get the best shot you often have to be very close to (or even in) the water.
Always be aware of the waves. It's easy for a big one to come in and ruin your gear if you aren't alert.
Try shooting as close to the ground as possible to get the best reflections. Pay attention to the movement of the water; reflections are always best as the water rushes back to the sea.
Once the sun sets behind the cove, the beach will get dark quickly so try to incorporate water into your shot since it carries light better than the sand.

Do nearby

Crescent Bay is just a couple streets (or walk around the corner of the rocks) to the north and is one of the most popular coves in Laguna Beach. It looks the other way at the palm trees so I sometimes shoot the palm trees looking north from Shaw’s Cove then run to Crescent Bay to get the opposite view.
Urth Cafe is a great spot to grab food or a coffee before or after your shoot!
