This is one of my favorite streets to photograph in Los Angeles. It’s filled with beautiful old theaters that are well maintained and bring such great character to this part of downtown.

The featured image is of S Broadway between 6th Street and 7th Street.
I was standing in the center of the crosswalk on 6th Street at the S Broadway intersection facing south towards the Los Angeles and Palace Theaters.

Sunset
All months of the year are suitable to photograph Broadway.
The featured shot was taken just after sunset. An element that really makes the shot are the theater’s marquee lighting — which may or may not be lit when you visit.
If you want to ensure the marquee lights will come on, Google to see when there is an event at the theater, and visit then! The lights tend to come on about 15 minutes before sunset.
I also feel the rain adds charm to the photo, so consider planning your visit on a rainy day!
Field tips
You're photographing in the middle of the street when the crosswalk lights are on, so be careful.
There are some great landmarks in your view - the Los Angeles Theater, Palace Theater, and Eastern Colombia Building.
Be patient and don’t settle. I probably shot more than 300 photos, walking back and forth for 20-25 minutes to wait for the perfect moment. Eventually, it happens!

Visit Ace Hotel (929 S Broadway) for a really cool rooftop bar and hangout spot.
Grand Central Market (317 S Broadway) is also cool with good food and entertainment.
