There's perhaps no better area to capture the essence of LA's infamous traffic than this overhead view of one of its busiest highways.

This view is located along the pedestrian walkway on the W 5th St overpass — the GPS coordinates will plant you at the exact point where I stood to capture the featured shot. There are no parking spots on the overpass itself, but there are plenty of areas to park along S Beaudry Ave, which is perpendicular to W 5th St.

All months are suitable to photograph the Interstate 110.
Visiting at nighttime offers the opportunity to create heavy light trails along I-110.

Field tips

I used a wide-angle 14-24mm lens at 20mm, which gave me a sprawling view of the entire highway, including the surrounding on-ramps and buildings.
You'll need to use a tripod to achieve the featured long exposure light trails. I took a 15 second exposure to ensure each lane had sufficient light trail coverage.
Experiment with different focal lengths and compositions along the overpass.
