Bo Gimbal Trail is a truly beautiful location, even if you're just there for the hike and not for the photo opportunities. We were staying at the property of Canyon Ranch Woodside (https://explorest.app.link/crw) and ventured to the area of Russian Ridge, which was covered in rolling gold hills. Looking east at Bo Gimbal, you'd never think you were just outside of the busy city, and looking west, you can see the ocean as the sun dips behind the horizon.

How to get there

This image was taken on Bo Gimbal Trail. The best way to get to this location is by car. You can park along the street down at the bottom of Ridge Trail (37.324557, -122.204907).
Once you see the sign to enter the path, walk up Ridge Trail for about 20-25 minutes until you get to where it splits with Bo Gimbal Trail. Reference the GPS coordinates and you'll see the exact place where I stood for this perspective.

In the late winter and early spring the hills of Bo Gimbal Trail will usually turn green, so in order to capture the golden landscape, I recommend visiting in the fall and summer.
This location is dependent on having soft, directional light and because of the hill, the sunrise is blocked, so sunset is definitely the best time to visit. As the sun lowers toward the horizon, Bo Gimbal Trail will completely transform. All of the hills will turn an amber color as the brush lights up.
Field tips
Watch out for ticks when you're in the area.
Photographing with a lens that has a medium to telephoto focal length will provide the most natural-looking photo.
This location is all about leading lines so make sure to utilize the pathways to lead your viewer through the scene.
Additionally, you'll want to make sure you enhance the symmetry of the shot when framing up the trees in the background.
Having a model in the shot will be very useful to have a subject at the end of your leading line.
