This image was taken of the Shanghai Tower during its annual light show. I stood at The Bund waterfront area (west side of Huangpo River) and faced towards the Shanghai Tower (east of the Huangpu river). The easiest way to get there is by taking the metro, then walking.
By Metro:
- Closest Station: Nanjing East Rd (Lines 2 & 10)
- Take ‘Exit 1’
- Head northeast on Nanjing E Rd toward the waterfront until you reach the GPS coordinates
Tips
When to go
Best season
January, February, November
Best time
Night
This amazing light show is only performed on special occasions, such as the Chinese Lunar New Year (typically in late-January or early-February) and the celebration of China International Import Expo (November 5-10th).
At night is when you can expect the light show and the tower to pop in the night’s sky, although photographing at blue hour when the sun is setting and city lights turn on is also beautiful!
Field tips
Keep an eye on your tripod and be mindful of the people around you. This area is a hot spot for tourists and local residents who are enjoying the show, so be respectful.
A tripod is a must to capture the lights! You can also experiment with using different lenses and focal lengths, which give each image their own perspective.
Move along the Bund and try composing your shot from other angles to find your own unique view point.

Do nearby
Embrace the best nightlife in Shanghai along The Bund. This famous Shanghai waterfront has bars, restaurants and rooftops with views of the water and the city's skyscrapers across the Huangpu River.
On the other side of the river, explore Lujiazui. This neighborhood is considered the business district of Shanghai — with skyscrapers like Shanghai Tower, Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Jin Mao Tower dominating the skyline.
