This image was taken on the second story of VUE Bar inside the Hyatt on the Bund Hotel. To get this view, take the elevator from the hotel lobby up to the VUE Bar. Once you're inside the bar, make your way to the second story where you'll see this view when facing southeast. All months of the year are suitable to photograph the view from VUE Bar at the Hyatt.

Visit this place at night to capture the city lights illuminated against the night sky and still water.

This shot was taken from an iPhone on a small tripod, but you can still get a similar image without a tripod. When using your tripod, please be discrete. The waiters may ask you to put your equipment away if they see it.

If you're using a camera, I recommend going with a wide-angle lens so you can capture the entire city skyline from across the river.

Position yourself so that you have the view of the river bend (on the right) in your shot. It will make your shot all the more unique to have the river on both sides of the city so you can enhance the natural landscape of the area.

I recommend checking out the nearby Waibaidu Bridge where you can see views of the river and city on either side of the pedestrian path.
