Wachsenburg Castle & Holzhausen Village

avatar
@kuhrmarvin
Just off the highway, this remote castle is atop a countryside hill overlooking a quaint village. The historic site was originally built in the 11th century and since then, it's been preserved to house a museum, hotel and restaurant for visitors to step back into time and feel like royalty. (before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements)

Tips

When to go

Best season

April, May, June, July, August, September, October

Best time

Sunrise
Visit the Wachsenburg Castle during the spring, summer and early fall to capture the trees before they're bare for the winter.
At sunrise, the castle looks incredible as it glows under the rising light. When there are low clouds, the castle will most likely to be above them since it's located on a hill. If you're lucky, you might experience a cloud inversion, so try visiting in the morning as well.

Field tips

Please follow local drone regulations. In Germany, you're required to have insurance and an address on your drone if they weigh more than 250g (approx. 0.5 lbs).
Facing south towards the castle will allow you to frame Holzhausen Village in the background
Fly around and get creative. There are endless perspectives in the valley's open space.
Try photographing with a telephoto lens so you can capture the detail of the architecture. Shooting in landscape orientation will allow you to frame more of the area.

Do nearby

Go inside the castle and learn about the hundreds of years of history. You can also dine at the restaurant that's set in a medieval-style dining room in the hotel.
Check out the nearby First German Bratwurst Museum, which is right around the corner from the castle. Whether you're in the area to take photos or see the castle, who wouldn't want to hear about the history of the German sausage, too!
