Messedamm Bus Station Stairwell (International Congress Center ICC Berlin)

The image was taken looking up from the stairwell of the Messedamn bus station underpass that connects to the street level where the International Congress Center ICC Berlin is. You'll find four similar entrances to the underpass in this area, but I took the photo from the southeast corner of Neue Kantstraße and Messedamm. To get to this intersection, you can take the Messedamn bus (via 104, 218, 349, M49 or N42) and then head to the southeast corner through the underground passageway. Reference the GPS coordinate in satellite mode for context.

If the sun is shining and the sky is clear blue, you can photograph the Messedamm bus station stairwell during any month.

Visit the stairwell during the day in the summer (9AM-9PM) and winter (10AM-3PM) for the best natural light. The four bus exits are identical, so if the lighting is off at one of the stops then head to one of the other three.

Symmetry is key here! Try positioning yourself in the center of the stairs to highlight the structure of the lamps. The detail of the lamps will also add an aesthetic element to your photo.

Because of the minimal design of the stairwell, this location is a great place to get creative and try out other perspectives. Try going up the stairs and then shooting down to create your own composition.

In addition to being a popular spot for movie scenes, this location is also well-known for fashion shoots. Incorporate a model into your shot and take advantage of the striking backdrop.

I recommend visiting the the International Congress Center (ICC) Berlin. It's one of the largest conference centers in the world and it has an amazing carpark that's definitely worth checking out.
