Fichtelsee Dock

This photo is of a dock on the east side of Fichtelsee in the municipality of Fichtelberg in Upper Franconia. The best way to get here is by car (cheaper than taxi) from Bayreuth or Weißenstadt, which are the two big cities nearby. Park your car at Parkplatz am Fichtelsee (50.0133454, 11.8542563). From there, cross the bridge towards Hotel am Fichtelsee, and then make a right walking down the east side of the reservoir until you see this specific dock. It'll take you about 13 minutes to walk from the parking lot.

My photo of the Fichtelsee Pier was taken at the end of March. Visit during the spring and summer for lush greenery all around and comfortable hiking. it's green all around. In the winter months, the trees are likely to be covered in snow—a beautiful winter wonderland scene. Different, but very cool to photograph!

Visit at sunrise for beautiful colors in the sky, and if you're lucky, you might even catch the moon (check when the next full moon is!). Sunset and blue hour are also great times for atmospheric scenery.

A wide-angle lens (24mm) will allow you to frame the surrounding landscape and create a minimalistic atmosphere with a lone model standing on the dock.

Aligning the walkway and positioning your model in the center of the dock creates a sense of leading lines and symmetry. For an even more balanced photo, consider the positioning of the dock across the lake on the left and elements on the right, such as the moon.

Traveling alone? Don't worry. Use a tripod to take photos of yourself. Just position the tripod facing the pier and set a timer.

Grab a bite inside the restaurant at Hotel am Fichtelsee—it has excellent views of the lake.

Ochsenkopf Peak, one of the highlights of the region, is a twenty-minute drive away. This part of Germany is particularly great for hiking and biking.
