Obersee Lake Boat House

This image is of the Boat House on Obersee Lake in Bavaria. The only way to access this location is by taking an hour ferry from Schöngau am Königssee. Check online to see when the ferry will depart from the docks (varies from season to season). Exit the ferry and follow the signs toward Obersee. If you're referencing the GPS coordinates, they will take you to the second boat house. There is another boat house that you'll come upon first while on your way to the boat house, which also makes for a great photo. You can visit the Obersee Boat House during any time of the year. To capture the orange leaves, like I have in my photo, I suggest visiting in the autumn or early spring. In my opinion, the autumn offers the most amazing colors! The lake will also be filled with water from the melting winter snow during this time.

It's almost impossible to get to this location for sunrise since the first boat operates after the sun has risen. In the morning, midday and late afternoon, you'll be able to find similar conditions on an overcast day. The chances for low clouds are very good if it's rained the day before, so keep this in mind if you want to capture a lot of clouds. The ferry even has a webcam so you can check the weather before driving to the ticket booth.

If you're planning to hike to the end of Obersee, you'll be out on the lake and in the valley for at least 4 hours. I highly recommend bringing water and food. You'll also have some options at both exits of the boat to stop at a smaller restaurant and grab food there.

Use the leaves to frame your photo. Stand behind the trees and position yourself so the branches are within your view point.

Position yourself so that you're aligned with the middle of the house. From this perspective, you'll be able to capture the reflection in the lake.

The surrounding mountains are beautiful to photograph with a zoom lens.

Spend the day exploring the area and then boat back at the end of the day.
