This image was taken at the south end of Cross Chapel, looking on to the Burg Eltz castle. Follow the GPS to see where I stood to get this view of the exterior of the castle and valley, framed by leaves.
To reach the castle, you'll need a car. I recommend parking in the lot just north of the historic landmark (50.211700, 7.339096) and then walking to Cross Chapel.
Be prepared to pay the 2€ parking fee when you park in the lot.
Tips
When to go
Best season
May, June, July, August, September
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Visit Burg Eltz from May to September to capture the vibrant green trees of Eltz forest.
You can find similar lighting conditions during anytime of the day, but the Burg Eltz website recommends visiting the area either before 11AM or after 3PM to avoid the lunchtime crowds.
Field tips
Use the natural formation of the leaves to guide the framing of your photo.
You'll be able to capture the forest and the entire castle with a wider lens (24mm).
A bigger aperture (low f/ stop) will allow you to bring more light into your image, which is helpful in this low-light scene. I shot a f/4.
