Tai O Fishing Village & Canal Look Down

I took this photo in the village of Tai O. First, I recommend getting on the bus from Tung Chung on Lantau Island. Once you get off of the bus, proceed into the village in front of you. Continue walking through and then go over the bridge onto the other side of the village. The streets will become more narrow, but keep going until you reach the second bridge that leads east. The GPS coordinates will take you to a clear area without houses so you can launch your drone safely. I flew my drone west and composed a look down view of where the canal splits.

You can find similar conditions any month of year, but I'd avoid going here during typhoon season (September-December) since there isn't a lot of shelter in Tai O.

Too early or too late in the day, the sun will cast unwanted shadows over the village.

Follow local drone regulations and permit requirements if flying a drone.

The central junction of the canal waterways (west of GPS) are where all of the boats travel.

Be patient and take a lot of shots! The boats will come in and out, so you'll have the opportunity to capture different moments.

To create a sense of symmetry, try to position your drone so that the canal runs across the center of your shot.

Check out the stilt houses along the water! These uniquely-built homes are elevated so that the residents' fishing boats can fit underneath for easy access right onto the creek.

There's also some great street food in the area — make sure to try the ice cream!
