Under Hell Gate Bridge at Astoria Park

Visit underneath Hell Gate Bridge any month of year, although during the winter months, the sun sets a lot earlier in the day. This creates a more gloomy vibe, like the one in this image.

As long as there's daylight you should be able to get the shot. I took the featured image during the late-afternoon. The sun was starting to set, so there was just enough light to illuminate under the bridge.

By using a telephoto lens (75mm) you'll be able to visually compress the arches that run underneath the bridge, making them appear closer together than they really are.

Shooting from a low-angle perspective will make the bridge appear larger in scale. This is also where a model comes in handy!

By standing in the middle of your frame the arches of the bridge will line up and create an optical illusion, making it seems like the bridge never ends.

I chose to post process in black and white for a classic look. Having color can cause a lot of distractions.

Astoria Park has a skate park, running track and tennis courts! Walk around the park and see what activity appeals to you.

Check out the local Parkside Market. This bodega is known for its friendly employees and signature sandwiches. It's a casual spot if you want to grab something on the go!

Explore the area! Unlike Manhattan, Astoria is more residential. There are historic buildings and houses that are unique to the neighborhood.
