The Plastic Veil in Hong Kong Supermarket

avatar
@monaris
Intriguingly simple, yet mysterious, this plastic veil happens to be an interesting material to play with a silhouette. It makes you wonder what’s behind the veil and draws the viewer in to evoke interest.

This image was taken inside of the Hong Kong Supermarket near Columbus Park Pavilion. The easiest way to get to this location is to take public transportation. To get a similar perspective, enter the supermarket along Hester St where the veil is and then make your way back to the second veil on the inside of the store. By subway: - Closest station: Grand St (B or D Lines) - Head south on Chrystie St toward Grand St - Turn right onto Hester St Address: Hong Kong Supermarket, 157 Hester St, New York, NY 10013

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can photograph the plastic veil of the Hong Kong Supermarket during any month of the year.
I recommend visiting this spot early in the morning to avoid people. For lighting purposes, morning, midday and late afternoon will produce similar conditions where you can take advantage of the light in the back to capture the shadow behind the veil.

Field tips

A wide-angle lens will allow you to have enough space to photograph the entire scene.
I like a sense of mystery in my photos, which is why I orchestrated the silhouette. It draws you in and makes you curious about what’s behind the veil.
If you don't have a model, you can wait for someone to pass by and then work with their natural movement.

Do nearby

You're in the heart of Chinatown, so there are plenty of restaurants and things to do within walking distance. One of the most popular eateries is Nom Wah Tea Parlor where you can grab authentic dim sum.
Another great choice is Silk Road Cafe. They serve delicious food and freshly prepared coffee just a few blocks away from the supermarket.
