Toketee Falls

avatar
@zachnichols
Cascading 113 feet over ancient volcanic rock, this powerful waterfall tumbles over two tiers into a crystal-clear pool. While central Oregon is full of beautiful falls, nature enthusiasts gather from all over to see experience this particular spot, which is one of the state's most famous falls.

Warning: before visiting this location, please note how dangerous it is. There will be ropes that will guide you down to the bottom of the falls and I urge visitors to not trust these ropes — they will not hold all of your weight! I cannot stress how difficult and dangerous this scramble is, so only very experienced hikers/climbers should embark on this journey. This photo of Toketee Falls was taken from the base of the waterfall, on a rock across the pool, directly facing the falls. To get here, you'll need to park at the Toketee Falls Trailhead parking area (43.263949, -122.427279) and then follow the half mile trail to the elevated viewing platform overlooking the waterfall. You can reach the base of the waterfall by walking down the hill from the viewing area. This is an extremely precarious climb that involves repelling down the side of the hill using a rope that's tied to a fence. Tread very carefully — if you take one wrong misstep, you could possibly slide down to the bottom of the ravine. I recommend bringing your own sturdy rope as backup since it's difficult to trust how strong the rope on the trail is. It's also a challenging climb back up afterwards, so if you attempt, make sure you are wearing proper gear and are in good physical shape. Driving directions: - From Roseburg, turn onto OR-138 E / NE Diamond Lake Blvd - Turn north off Highway 138 at milepost 58.6 onto Forest Road 34 (Toketee-Rigdon Road) - Cross the first bridge and turn left at the Toketee Falls Trailhead Parking - Toketee Falls Trailhead is at the far end of the parking area
