Dunnottar Castle, Walking Path & Old Hall Bay

Although this medieval castle is partially ruined, it still holds many rich secrets of Scotland's colorful past. Today, what's left of the most recent 15th and 16th century-built structure looks like something out of a fantasy novel. Capture the eroding exterior atop a scenic hill overlooking a wavy bay and you'll be able to create a majestic, one-of-a-kind image. (before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements)

This drone image of the Dunnottar Castle, walking path and Old Hall Bay was taken from the side of the grassy field before the entrance to the castle. To get this perspective, park at the public parking (56.945246, -2.205594) and then stand near the foot of the walking path so that you're able to incorporate it in your photo.

Tips

When to go

Best season

March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
Dunnottat Castle, the walking path and Old Hall Bay are best photographed in the spring, summer and fall months. During those seasons, you'll be able to capture the grass at its greenest.
Visit the castle on an overcast day for the best lighting conditions. During clear skies, you'll get the best images at sunrise and sunset.

Field tips

Before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements.
I suggest including the walking path towards the castle in your photo so you can utilize it as your main leading line.
Try positioning the castle in the center of the photo, framed by the backdrop of the bay, for a balanced shot.
Change up the drone angle and view of the castle. A slight look down would look great, but a higher altitude or a different composition could also look good. Get creative and don't limit yourself here!
Although it's not required, it could help to have a Neutral Density filter and/or polarizer filter for your drone to cut glare and reflections, as well as give more flexibility.
You can also bring along a wide-angle lens if you want to visit the inside of the castle. You'll find incredible views and architecture to photograph.
