I brought a couple friends to this location for portraiture but realized how fantastic the skyline looked with water and Lilly pads in the foreground. The three-level stairway protrudes from the water blending into the skyline, connecting nature with Singapore’s vibrant city life.

Sunset
All months of the year are great to photograph this location. October and November bring the haziest of skies, if that’s your style.
The skyline’s reflection on the water will be strongest around sunset as the sun approaches the horizon level. The sunset gradients off buildings can make a huge difference to your cityscape photography. If you visit earlier in the day you wouldn’t be able to capture a similar glow. Visit on a weekday to avoid the flood of tourists.
Field tips
To get this composition I stood on the ledge along the water and got really low, reaching my camera out just on top of the water.
Be patient and wait until there aren’t many people walking in your view.
There’s a lot in this frame: the water body, lily pads, stairway, skyline. Try telling story a story with how you incorporate it all into your shot!
