Dragonfly Lake Path view of Marina Bay Sands Starburst

This is a perfect setting to create the feeling of an outdoor traveler, in a big city, on a path towards the unknown – a very difficult vibe to create in Singapore! This area casts awesome shadows which adds a nice effect.

Once you enter Gardens by The Bay, walk towards the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. When you reach the Indian Garden circular path, turn left, and you’ll see a stairway that leads you down to Dragonfly Lake. I was standing at the beginning of the pathway alongside the lake. By MRT: - Closest MRT Station: Bayfront (Downtown Line) - Take exit “C” - Head northeast on Bayfront Ave - Turn left towards the Marina Bay Overpass, take the stairs and walk across into Gardens by the Bay

Tips

When to go

Best season

Best time

Late afternoon
Every month of the year the sun generally sets behind the Marina Bay Sands, but the sky needs to have a fair amount of clouds to create the starburst effect (too cloudless makes the light too harsh; too cloudy makes the light too weak). Visit http://www.suncalc.net for accurate sunlight movements at this location.
Visit during late-afternoon (around 4-5pm) when the sun starts to descend behind the Marina Bay Sands – this is when you can capture starbursts. You must visit at this time because later during sunset you won’t be able to see the sun!

Field tips

By using a wide-angle lens (16mm) you can compose the sky, entire MBS and the pathway along Dragonfly Lake. A cropped picture without the sky tends to feel incomplete.
I added a model to the photo to make this normal cityscape shot more interesting by giving it some perspective. Given the light conditions, I was able to create these amazing long shadows making the shot more interesting.
If you visit on very different weather conditions and can’t create a similar feel, be adaptable! You can wait for sunset where the sky behind the MBS will glow orange or pink and red. Night shots are also beautiful.
