Momentum Sculpture Look Up

avatar

In the heart of the Central Business District lies a fascinating structure. It's bright red appearance and swirly design can't be missed and anyone that has walked past surely would have been attracted to its design. I love its cone shape structure, but never thought it’d be exciting to photograph. But, bending a few rules and crossing a 4-lane road, you can get up close and personal will be rewarded.

This is a Look Up of the Momentum sculpture, created by Dudu Gerstein. It’s Singapore’s tallest public structure. It’s at the intersection of Collyer Quay and Marina Blvd. Approach the artwork from the left, there will be an access point through the bushes. Climb up the wall and you will reach the base of the sculpture, simply crawl under the first "bar" and you will be within the sculpture itself. By MRT: - Closest MRT Station: Bayfront (Circle Line & Downtown Line) - Head west toward Marina View - Turn right onto Marina View - Turn left onto Marina Blvd

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Mid-day
All months of the year are suitable to photograph the Momentum sculpture.
Given this shot is from within the sculpture and light is low, it’s important to visit when the sun is at its brightest – around mid-day. If you’re bringing a tripod the time of day is a little less important.

Field tips

To get within the structure, it's better to crawl under the bars that go around it. Simple task, but may result in getting your pants and hands dirty.
If you bring a wide-angle lens you will be able to capture the structure in it's entirety whilst also having the dynamic ability to shoot from many different angles. If your focal length is too zoomed, you will be highly restricted to what you can do.
Try lying down on the floor, it will give you a much better perspective of the structure, and it will help you to create the image that you want. Not to mention maybe that extra 5mm further back that may enhance your image. But beware, the ground is extremely dusty.
Maneuver yourself and your camera to maximize the capture of sun rays entering the sculpture. The right light will make a big difference to your image.

Do nearby

There's a Taiwanese stringy cheese toast at the MRT. I love it. Take the escalator down, walk straight, do not go down towards the gantry itself, simply follow the path and take the first right, you won't miss it!
