In this remote yet beautiful part of Lake Powell, the dramatic red rocks will greet you as the soft sand blends with the curvy cliffs. These unreal views and the incredibly dramatic final vista will reward you for completing the difficult hike. If you're an advanced hiker, this will be one of your Southern Utah faves.
This photo was taken at Reflection Canyon, located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. To get there, you'll need to do a difficult hike, 8-miles in and 8 miles out (the first four miles are easiest). You'll also need an overnight backcountry permit; visit Escalante Interagency Visitor Center to pick it up for free.
Once you're in the town of Escalante in Southern Utah (located on Highway 12), you will need to drive down the Hole-in-the-Rock Road toward the Reflection Canyon trailhead. The road is extremely rough, and I’d highly recommend a 4WD SUV and airing down your tires.
After driving around 30 miles, you will reach the Reflection Canyon Trailhead (37.252165, -110.973517). Make sure to give yourself a lot of time to get down there as you won't be able to drive fast.
Take your time and spread the hike over two full days. It will make your experience much more enjoyable.
When you get to Reflection Canyon, you will recognize the cliffs and the lake in my photo. To get this perspective, I stood at the edge of the canyon and shot wide facing southeast.
