Gänsemarkt U-Bahn Station Escalator

This photo was taken of a yellow escalator inside the Gänsemarkt U-Bahn station in Hamburg, Germany. To get here, take the U2 line to the Gänsemarkt (Oper) stop. Upon exiting the station, you'll head up these colorful yellow escalators that will eventually lead to the street level. Stand at the bottom of the escalator and position your model at the top in order to achieve this perspective.

The Gänsemarkt U-Bahn station escalator is suitable for photography year round.

Since the station is underground, you can visit during anytime — day or night.

In order to capture the entirety of the escalator and its colorful walls, make sure to use a wide-angle lens. For reference, I shot at a 14mm focal length.

I'd recommend using a model in order to add some life into your image. I posed my model at the top of the frame, at the center point of the leading lines, to act as a natural subject. You can have them position themselves at various points on the escalator to experiment with scale, too.

Try centering the escalators perfectly in your frame. When composing your shot, use either side of the escalator to create leading lines that draw the eye upward.

Surrounding the Gänsemarkt U-Bahn station is Gänsemarkt (literally translates to "Geese Market,") a public square that once held an opera house. Now, the area is home to shops, restaurants and the Gänsemarkt Passage mall.
