Hundestrand Nienhagen Beach view of Baltic Sea & Gespensterwald Forest

avatar

Above the rugged coastline of this Baltic Sea beach lies a mysterious forest known to locals as Ghost Forest. The thin, eerie trunks and branches on the hilltop woodland mystify locals and travelers — especially during sunrise when the rocky shore below gleams against the twilight glow, illuminating the forest in the distance.

This image was taken on the shore of the Hundestrand Nienhagen beach with a view of the Baltic Sea and Gespensterwald Forest. I was facing east to get this perspective of the sun rising over the sea. The easiest way to get to this location is by car. I suggest parking in the Parkplatz (54.163765, 11.948952) near Ferienwohnung Ostseeblick Nienhagen, then walking to the beach. Reference the GPS coordinates to locate the exact place where I stood. From Parkplatz: - Head southwest on Kliffstraße toward Strandstraße - Turn right onto Strandstraße - Continue straight to stay on Strandstraße - Turn left to stay on Strandstraß

Tips

When to go

Best season

April, May

Best time

Sunrise
To capture the Hundestrand Nienhagen beach view of Baltic Sea and Gespensterwald Forest, photograph this location in April or May. During these months, the trees of the forest will be full and the sun will rise in a similar spot as it does in my photo.
This east-facing perspective is best captured during sunrise. The early-morning light will reflect off of the rocks and produce a mesmerizing foreground. If it's foggy, like many mornings are, you'll also be able to capture amazing light rays.

Field tips

I recommend using a telephoto lens (70mm) so you can get a slightly compressed shot of the trees in the distance.
Try aligning yourself so you're on the edge of the tide so you can capture the water as it ebbs and flows against the shore.
Once you start shooting, getting as low to the ground as possible will emphasize the rocks in the foreground and add depth to your image.
