An easy overlook directly in the town of Hilo affords incredible views of this 80-foot waterfall. The roaring falls cascade over a lava cave, which according to Hawaiian legend, houses the ancient Polynesian goddess moon Hina. Come here in the morning to experience the multiple namesake rainbows that refract off the falls!

This image of Rainbow Falls was taken from the main Rainbow Falls overlook at Wailuku River State Park. To get here, drive down Waiānuenue Avenue until you reach Rainbow Drive. Head up Rainbow Drive until you see the Rainbow Falls Section parking lot on the north side of the road.
From the parking area, you'll immediately see a ramp that leads to a lookout, wrapping around the basin of the falls. I stood on the opposite side of the basin, facing the falls and using the natural foliage to frame my photo.
You can also continue to the top of the falls by following a staircase to the left of the parking lot. While it's a unique viewpoint with a beautiful old banyan tree, the view of the waterfall is significantly better from the main lookout.
Directions from Hilo:
- From Hwy 19, cross the steel bridge and and turn west onto Waianuenue Ave (Hwy 200)
- Continue 1.5 miles and keep right on Waianuenue Ave where Hwy 200 veers left
- Shortly thereafter, turn right on Rainbow Drive and continue to Rainbow Falls parking lot on the right
