One of the most secluded locations on Hawaii Island, Waipi'o is a hidden paradise. It was once home to Hawaiian royalty, and today, it remains virtually untouched because of how difficult it is to access. The valley of Waipi'o has a river that leads out to the ocean, a view of the tallest waterfall on the island and a black sand beach to enjoy—normally all to yourself, which is even better!

This image was taken on the shore of Waipi'o Black Sand Beach in the Waipi'o Valley.
The only way to get down to Waipio Valley is in a 4x4 because of how steep the terrain is. If you attempt to go down in any other car, you'll get stuck and have to get towed out of the valley.
Taking this photo is not difficult, but the drive down is extremely tough, which is why I gave this photo location a "difficult" skill level.
I've seen people park at the top of the valley lookout and walk down because they don't have a 4x4. If you chose to do this, prepare for a very long, muddy hike.
Reference the GPS coordinates when you're on the beach and you'll reach the exact point where I stood for this perspective.
