When to go
Best time
Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
As the Des Voeux Footbridge is covered, this location is suitable for photography year round; however, I recommend visiting on a rainy day if you'd like to capture the pedestrians with umbrellas.
This location is suitable for photography at any time during daylight hours.
Field tips
While this spot is fun for people watching at any time, I highly recommend coming on a rainy day to capture the colorful umbrellas. They'll not only bring a pop of color to the image, but they'll also add some character with the varying prints on each person's umbrella.
This is a busy intersection, so remain patient and wait for pedestrians to begin passing along the street for your perfect shot.
Take a few rapid fire photos to see what different natural compositions you'll find. The more photos you have, the more options you'll have in post-processing.
There are two pedestrian walkways directly opposite of each other, both crossing Des Voeux Rd — try shooting from both of them to experiment with the light at different times of day.

If you like people watching in city scenes, it's worth it to explore the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, which are a series of raised moving walkways and bridges that traverses across 2,600 feet of steep hillside. Interestingly enough, it's the largest outdoor covered escalator system in the world!
