Enjoy some of the most incredible views of Hong Kong skyline along this hiking trail. It's a challenging trek, but it's worth the effort and will give you a true feel of the area's population density.

The featured image was taken from the Lion Rock Trail Peak and is a zoomed up view of the Chuk Yuen South Estate. From the start of the trail the hike is 1.8km (1.1 miles) to the peak. Enjoy the views of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island! By MTR: - Closest MTR Station: Won Tai Sin (Kwon Ton Line) - Take exit "B3" - Follow the Sha Tin Pass Road up and around until you reach Fat Jong Temple. - Keep following the Sha Tin Pass Road right up the hill and eventually you will reach the trail head labeled Lion Rock Country Park. You can also taxi directly to the Lion Rock trailhead from the MTR station for a reasonable cost (HKD $22-30).

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Night, Midnight+
You can capture beautiful shots from the Lion Rock trail any month of year. For clear views go on a sunny and high visibility day (instead of a rainy one!).
At night the skyline beautifully illuminates and is perfect for photography. Views at sunset are also beautiful, so start your hike an hour before the sun drops in order to capture the vibrant skies.

Field tips

You'll need to hike around an hour so definitely bring at least 1 liter of water.
At night the trail gets very dark so I highly recommend bringing a flashlight. I wouldn't recommend hiking alone.
By using a telephoto lens (135mm) you'll be able to zoom in on the distant skyline. Try finding a section of residences to focus on to show the true population density of Hong Kong.
It gets extremely windy on the mountain, so if you're photographing at night, a sturdy tripod is important. I took a 6 second exposure.
