Lung Wah Hotel Illuminated Lantern Entrance

avatar
@vnthota
An entrance adorned with red lanterns takes you back to the yesteryears of old Hong Kong. Once a popular hotel in the 1950's, this historical restaurant is famous for its signature dish popular with tourists: roast pigeon. After hosting iconic greats like Bruce Lee in its tenure, the hotel closed down in 1985, but the cinematic building still retains its old-world charm.

This photo was taken at the front entrance of Lung Wah Hotel restaurant. The restaurant is down the street from the Lek Yuen Fountain in Sha Tin, which is another location I have in the app. By public transportation: - Closest station: Sha Tin Station (via East Rail Line) - Head northeast toward Sha Tin Station Circuit - Turn left onto Sha Tin Station Circuit and take the pedestrian overpass - Turn right onto Pai Tau St - Turn left - Turn right - Keep left and the destination will be on the left Address: Lung Wah Hotel, No.22 Ha Wo Che Village, Sha Tin NT Hong Kong

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Night
All months of the year are suitable to photograph Lung Wah Hotel.
I recommend photographing Lung Wah Hotel at night to make sure the lamps are on. The lanterns add a vital element to the shot, so having them illuminated will take your composition to the next level.

Field tips

Try to bring along a good prime lens with a wide aperture. A tripod can also help with the low-light conditions.
I suggest using a mirror, piece of glass, CD or other reflective object to bring in beautiful reflections of the lamps and some funky fractional light into your shots. To experiment, just hold your mirror up to your lens and play around with different effects.
When composing your photo, use the hallway to create leading lines and the lanterns as natural framing devices to focus the eye on your subject.
Make sure to position the model in the center of your frame to evoke a sense of balance.

If you're feeling hungry, I recommend the hotel's restaurant and the delicacy they're known for — the roasted pigeon!
