This easy urban hike is filled with a rich history of Hong Kong's past — it even gets its name from pirate's of the Ming Dynasty! Take in the views of both the mountains and skyline as you embrace the old and new of Hong Kong.

How to get there

The image was taken from Devil's Peak Top Battery with a view of the Lei Yue Mun Estate and city skyline. I stood just before the stone ledge looking west to get this view. To get here, take the MTR Kwun Tong (Green Line) to Yau Tong station and exit from A1 into Domain Mall. Go up the escalators to the mall’s ground floor and then find the Tai Hing restaurant at the end of the ground floor. From here, exit the mall onto Ko Chiu Road. Continue walking up Ko Chiu Road for a few minutes until you reach a curve in the sidewalk leading you up a hill. There will be a sign pointing to the hill that reads, “Chinese Permanent Cemetery.” Follow the paved road and start walking up the hill. About 10-15 mins into the paved hike, you'll see a sign saying "Wilson Trail" to your left. Cross the road, and walk up the steps toward the trail. Take the trail going left and follow the signs, and the GPS coordinates, for Devil’s Peak Top Battery.

Tips

When to go

Best season

All months

Best time

Morning, Mid-day, Late afternoon
You can find this view from Devil's Peak Top Battery any month of the year, but I recommend going on a cool day when the weather isn't too hot.
You can capture this view as long as it's daylight, but try to stay out of the direct, mid-afternoon sun. It's best to go earlier in the morning or for sunset if you want colorful hues in the sky. When I took the photo, it was a lovely clear day, but you can always experiment and hike on a different day. Perhaps you'll be able to capture a moody fog that'll change your composition completely!

Field tips

Be mindful of your surroundings. You can have a subject sit on the wall, but it's quite high, so be careful.
I recommend using a wide-angle lens (29mm). It will allow you to capture more of the cityscape in the background.
Photographing a model brings scale to your image. Get creative with their pose and try positioning them in a way where the color of their clothes contrasts well with the cityscape in the background.

Do nearby

Devil's Peak stands at 222 meters in height and is full of history. When the British acquired the New Territories in 1898, they started work on batteries at Devil's Peak. The Gough Battery up at the peak consists of two gun pits. Today, the gun pits and barracks lie in derelict conditions. It's fascinating to see!
