Hopewell Centre Observation Lift view of Wan Chai & The Center

The featured image was taken from the glass observation lift in the Hopewell Centre, located in the Wan Chai district. From the ground level, go to the podium level (1st floor) and take the elevator to the 17th floor. Then, find another set of glass doors that take you to two glass lifts. Enjoy the ride up to the 62nd floor — as many times as you want — for free! It takes about 15 seconds to go one direction. All months of the year are suitable to photograph from the observation lift.

If it’s a nice day I recommend visiting late-afternoon through sunset when the light is softest. As long as the sun doesn’t directly hit the building you should be able to avoid the reflection on the glass. If it’s cloudy, any time during daylight should work.

By using a wide-angle lens (18-20mm) you'll be able to incorporate more of the surroundings behind your subject. You don’t want to get too much of the lift, though, as it’ll take away from the floating in the sky feel.

If you position yourself in the center of the lift you’ll be able to line-up and level the curves.
