At this upscale hotel, check out the rooftop view for one of the most epic sunset spots in the city. The Freedom Tower shines through as the focal point in this image, beautifully capturing Lower Manhattan from up above the street.

This image was taken on the roof of the W Union Square Hotel in Manhattan. You don't need to have access to a hotel room to get to the roof, but you'll need to be escorted by an employee and security since it's not a public area. You can call ahead or ask an employee to lead you to this spot once you're there. I stood on the back airvent, facing south onto Lower Manhattan. Every part of this roof has a landscape picture you can take. For this specific picture, I put the metal rail in the foreground and focused on the freedom tower in the background. By Subway: - Closest Station: 14 Street - Union Sq Station (4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, W) - Head northeast on Union Square E toward E 15th St - Turn right onto E 17th St and the destination will be on your right Address: 201 Park Ave S, New York, NY 10003

Sunset
You can photograph from this rooftop any month of the year.
There are so many sunset spots in the city, but this is by far my favorite. Even if it's on a cloudy day (like in this photo), I recommend going during the sunset for the best lighting and an amazing view point.

Field tips

Be cautious on the roof! This isn't a public space, so it's not made for safety. Make sure you're being escorted by an employee and stay behing the railings.
By using a 50mm lens I was able to focus the railing in the foreground while also composing the cityscape ahead. Experiment with different lenses for different views.
I used the vertical lines of the railing so that the eyes would go from front to back when looking at the photo. This put the Freedom Tower into focus and incorporating the railing added another element of depth.

If you enjoy Mediterranean food, visit Irvington in the hotel. They serve lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. They offer a lot of small-plate options, so go with a big group!
Just south of the hotel is Union Square Park. Walk around, people watch or check out the Greenmarket — an open-air food and flower market — at this famous New York City space.
