With towering cliffs and a magnificent plunging waterfall, Kilt Rock (which gets its name from the vertical basalt columns and sills of dolerite that form a pattern resembling a Scottish kilt), is any photographers dream. Bring a drone to this location and the possibilities are endless!

How to get there

This image was taken from the Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls Viewpoint, looking onto Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls. I recommend driving to this location and then parking in the lot by the viewpoint (57.610908, -6.173002).
Once you get to the viewpoint, launch your drone a couple meters out into the ocean to get a good view of the coastline.

You can find similar conditions at Kilt Rock From Mealt Falls Viewpoint during any month.
To get the first light of day on the side of the cliffs, I visited in the morning. Also, during this time, there will be less people.
Field tips
Before flying a drone, check and follow local drone regulations and permit requirements.
This oceanside location is at the top of some high cliffs and is prone to high winds, so ensure you exercise caution when flying your drone.
Be sure to stay on the designated pathways so you do not damage the plants. It's also much safer to stay on the pathway.
I flew the drone right down to beach level in order to capture the low angle, looking back up along the cliffs.
Try incorporating the beach in the lower half of the image and lining up the bottom of the cliffs through the middle (like I did in my photo) to give a sense of scale and perspective.

The Isle of Skye is filled with stunning landscapes, so simply driving and looking for photographic inspiration could be a fun way to spend a few hours.
One of my favorite things to see nearby is The Storr, which is an interesting hillside that was formed by an ancient landslip. It's a short 15-minute drive away and I also have a location in the app there — make sure to check it out!
If you're interested in Scotch whisky, you might like to take a tour of Talisker Distillery. It's the oldest working distillery on the Isle and it's located in the village of Carbost, about an hour drive away from Kilt Rock.
