The Flower Fields, Persian Buttercup Flowers

The featured image was taken at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad and is of the Tecolote® Giant Ranunculus plant — one of the finest strains of ranunculus plants in the world. This unique blossom is also known as a Persian Buttercup or Ranunculus Asiatic. These flowers can be found in the fields. They’re divided by colors (red, orange, yellow, white, pink, multicolors, etc). To avoid long lines buy your entrance ticket online. You can wander around (suggested) or take a wagon ride that circles the property. As you go around the rectangular field, at the top, you can get out, walk around, and take photos. The Flower Fields are only open during the spring time, so check to confirm they’re open before you visit.

Try to come in the morning before 10:00am when it’s less busy and easier to find parking. The sunlight is also less harsh. If you go between 11-4pm you should be prepared to photograph in harsh light. Late-afternoon light is great for photography.

DO NOT go off trail or damage the flowers.

The further you walk down the fewer people there will be, so put on comfortable shoes and go towards the end of the fields for an empty background!

Surrounding buildings or people traffic could distract your background, so take your time to find a space where you’re surrounded by only flowers.

By using a wide-angle lens (18mm) you’ll be able to incorporate more of the flower fields.

Once inside you can navigate to various areas of flowers, rose gardens, poinsettias, and more.
